Ghost Whisper Mythology Deepens

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who stars in CBS' supernatural drama Ghost Whisperer, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming third season will delve into the history of the fictional small town of Grandview and will explain her character's purpose there.

"It's sort of her calling to be there," Hewitt said in an interview at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Los Angeles on July 19. "So you'll find out more about the place that she lives in, and I think it'll help people understand a little bit why she seems to be this target all the time in this town and [why] everyone else, they just sort of live these peaceful lives. You will find out that that's sort of just the way her life is really supposed to be. And how Grandview plays into that."

The hit show's writers previously said that a theme of the new season will be the increasing power of the dark side. Hewitt expanded upon that idea, saying that the show will further explain the interest the dark side has in her character.

"I think the theme of this show has always been sort of Melinda being the light and how the dark is sort of always trying to squash her light," she said. "And the darkness will definitely get stronger this year, as it did in our season finale. I mean, the darkness really wipes her out, essentially. And will continue to want to do so."

Hewitt added that her show differs from others about psychics and mediums in that the mythology is constantly changing and expanding. "They try to keep people interested," she said of the show's writing staff. "We don't always want the show just to be about a woman who talks to ghosts and crosses them over into the light. We want to show that her life is complicated and sort of has a lot of different facets to it." Ghost Whisperer returns for its third season on September 28, 2007 and will air in its regular timeslot, Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS (USA).
